At least one neighborhood shop has found a way to beat the February blues. For the past week, Huey’s Chueys Candy Boutique has transformed into an art gallery for a second grade class from P.S. 20. Adorning the already colorful walls are original watercolor paintings made for the “Me as a Plant” project, in which students imagined what they would look like as plants. The Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership arranged the exhibition, introducing owners Diane and Janice Huey to the students’ art teacher, Magin Schantz.

“One woman came in and asked if the art was for sale,” Diane said. “A lot of people have been commenting on it.”

The twin sisters have previously displayed work by students at the Urban Assembly of Arts and Letters and are hoping to keep the miniature gallery going.

“We’re going to reach out to one or two other schools’ art departments during the summer,” Diane said.

For now, art enthusiasts can stop by Huey’s Chueys at 378 Myrtle Avenue to check out the paintings, as well as DC Optics just down the street at 390 Myrtle Avenue, where more of the class’ work is on display.
