The victim of a slashing last Thursday morning on Beverley Road spoke to CBS 2 News about her ordeal.

The 53-year-old woman, Janinna Popko, who was slashed across the throat and required 13 stitches, told CBS 2 News that she had never seen her assailant before.

The assailant said nothing, Popko described, he simply came from behind, attacked her, and then fled. Popko was walking on the south side of Beverley Road, near Rugby Road, at about 9:45am last Thursday when the assault occurred.

“If somebody just attacks you from behind, how do you defend yourself?” Popko’s husband asked reporters.

Popko said that she was “very lucky and very grateful” that the wound had not been deeper.

She also observed that she was checking messages on her cell phone and was not paying attention when she was approached. “Better be aware — don’t stay on your cell phone,” Popko told CBS 2 News.

The NYPD is offering up to a $2,500 reward for any information about the attack.
