‘Very Good Girls,’ Film Shot In Prospect Park South, Hits Theaters This Friday

“Very Good Girls,” a coming-of-age film starring Dakota Fanning and Elizabeth Olsen that was shot in Prospect Park South two years ago and, at least from the trailer, seems chock-full of Ditmas Park sights, will hit select theaters this Friday.

Directed by Maggie and Jake Gyllenhaal’s mom, Naomi Foner, the film revolves around the characters played by the 20-year-old Fanning and 25-year-old Olsen, who are learning what it means to be on the brink of adulthood as they navigate the changing role of friendship and love just before they embark for college. And while the film has often been billed as a movie about two teens hoping to lose their virginity before college, Foner told the Daily News that “our movie is about friendship and truth and a lot about female sexuality.”

In the same interview with the Daily News, Fanning agreed with her director, saying, “obviously there’s a guy, but really it’s about the girls’ friendship, and about what girls go through.”

Filmed in 2012, the movie seems to be a bit of an ode to our neighborhood, including featuring a shot of one of the most filmed homes on Albemarle, as well as what appears to be many other spots in our area – including a scene on Buckingham and Church in which Fanning’s character  is wooed by her love interest.

The movie (which also stars Demi Moore, Ellen Barkin, Peter Sarsgaard, Richard Dreyfuss, Kiernan Shipka, and Clark Gregg) filmed at a number of what the AV Club called “less typical” New York sites, including Brooklyn Botanic Garden and the ferry docks of Manhattan.
