On July 14, ConEd installed a utility pole inches away from the face of a crosswalk signal on the northwest side of Avenue S and East 36 Street, rendering the sign that tells pedestrians when it is safe to cross the road completely invisible.

This was one of three locations where this oversight happened. The other two were on Avenue R and Marine Parkway, and Quentin Road and Marine Parkway, according to Dorothy Paul of Community Board 18.

According to ConEd, they followed specifications given to them by the Department of Transportation (DOT).

However, Brooklyn Deputy Borough Commissioner Claudette A. Workman told CB18 that the issues will be corrected by the end of next week, but a DOT spokesperson only confirmed that the Avenue S and East 36 Street location will be corrected in that time. The others will be fixed as soon as possible, according to the DOT spokesperson.

“If anybody’s trying to cross here, they’re not even going to notice when to do it, and that would be really difficult to cross and pretty dangerous for the kids too, if they don’t even see it and cross the street and get hurt,” local resident David Dugue told Brooklyn Daily. “It’s really dangerous and foolish.”
