Things To Do In Southern Brooklyn: A Greek Cultural Festival, A Pet Costume Contest, The BITE 2015

Once again, we’ve collected a bunch of festive, outdoorsy events in the area to keep your weekend jam-packed with fun and sun. Kick things off with a fabulous food tasting on Sheepshead Bay tonight, followed by obscene amounts of pita and souvlakia at a Greek festival Friday. Work off all those pounds on Saturday by volunteering at a coastal cleanup day in Kaiser Park. Got a pet? Let your iguana strut her stuff at a pet costume contest in Coney Island. Then, Sunday, there is Sheepshead Summer Strolls, which is sure to bring swarms of pedestrians out of their homes and onto the streets.

Three Hierarchs Greek Festival
When: Friday, May 29, 5pm – Sunday, May 31, 12am
Where: Three Heirarchs Greek Orthodox Church, 1724 Avenue P
What: This three-day, family-friendly Greek cultural festival includes Greek food, rides, activities, face painting, arts and crafts, traditional Greek music, prizes, and more!
How much: Admission is free. Prices vary for food, amusements.

Il Festival Della Musica Italiana with Little Language Italian School
When: Friday, May 29, 6pm
Where: Onora! Italian Ministry of Most Precious Blood Church school auditorium, Bay 46 Street entrance
What: The mini-sopranos at this Italian language playgroup will be putting on their “Four Seasons”-inspired musical, featuring Italian songs from the ’50s and ’60s. The show will include special guest performances by soprano Gina Ricci and Francesca Cavaliere, an award-winning Italian singer.

Dyker Singers Vocal Workshop

Where: Dyker Library, 8202 13th Ave
What: It’s the grownups’ turn to have some fun. Love to sing? This welcoming group of music-lovers has an energetic vocal teacher and is always looking for new members. There is no need to be a great singer — as long as you love to sing, you’ll fit right in!

Domestic Disorder’s Annual Charity Car Show
When: Saturday May 30, 9am
Where: Saint Peter Catholic Academy, 8401 23rd Avenue
What: Come out to support Domestic Disorder’s Annual Charity Car Exhibition to support St. Mary, Mother of Jesus Parish and St. Peter’s Academy.
How much: Advance – $16, At door – $20.

“It’s My Estuary Day” at Kaiser Park
When: Saturday, May 30, 9am – 4pm
Where: Kaiser Park House, near Neptune Avenue and West 29th Street
What: All are invited to a day of service, learning, and celebration along the Coney Island Creek in Kaiser Park. “It’s My Estuary Day” will start with a coastal cleanup in the morning, followed by activities and various educational exhibition tables. In addition, local high school students will be giving an informative demonstration of student work to the public.

Pet Day At Deno’s Wonder Wheel
When: Saturday, May 30, 1pm
Where: Deno’s Wonder Wheel, West 12th Street
What: Pets ride the Wonder Wheel free all day, and at 1pm there will be a pet costume contest judged by Councilman Mark Treyger, Miss Cyclone 2011, Angie Pontani, and Diane Vounderis. First, second, and third place winners will receive gift certificates to Petco.
How much: Two cans of cat or dog food to benefit Sean Casey Animal Shelter.

“Cooks & Books” Classes at Green Apron Kitchen
When: Saturday, May 30, 10am
Where: Green Apron Kitchen, 7122 Bay Parkway
What: The popular kids’ cooking camp is offering a four-class package including hour-long Saturday classes for children ages 5 and under (accompanied by a caregiver). The teeny tiny chefs will read popular children’s books like “If You Give a Dog a Doughnut” and “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” and make dishes inspired by the stories.
How much: 4 classes for $110. Space is limited.

Sheepshead Summer Strolls

What: Once again, the Sheepshead Summer Stroll will transform Sheepshead Bay Road into an open pedestrian plaza full of local cuisines, family fun activities, DJs, live music, car shows, eating contests, giveaways, shopping, and more!
