Support Empowerment Without Pity at Rise Up 2013: From Brooklyn to Ethiopia

1hundred girls

Local artists and musicians are gathering at Littlefield on Wednesday, March 6 for Rise up 2013, a benefit for the Studio Samuel Foundation.

The New York/Addis Ababa-based fair trade fashion company is dedicated to providing life skills and job opportunities to young women in Ethiopia who are aging out of the orphanage system. All proceeds will benefit their “1Hundred Girls” impact plan, which aims to reach over 100 girls this year, providing them with HIV education, mentoring, healthcare, self defense training, financial advising, and career counseling. At the most basic level, the Foundation provides a source of strength and sense of community.

Comedian Wyatt Cenac will host the event, and live soul performances come from Brooklyn’s The Del-Reys, Tomás Doncker, and Kendra Morris. In addition to the live performances, there will be a multimedia “Wall of Women” installation in Littlefield’s gallery and free giveaways to the first 30 guests.

622 Degraw Street between 3rd & 4th Avenues, 7:00 p.m. (6:30 doors), $25 tickets available here
