Now is the time to sign up for a farm share so you can enjoy all of the wonderful produce grown in our region this summer. Here’s information on just two of the CSA’s (Community Supported Agriculture) in our area.

Ditmas Park CSA
The Ditmas Park CSA has opened registration for the 2016 season. Only a limited number of shares are available. The CSA will close its 2016 membership once that number has been reached, or by May 15.

What’s Available: As in previous seasons, the produce — including a changing array of seasonal vegetables and melons grown using traditional and sustainable methods — will be supplied by farmer Jorge Carmona of Amantai Farms. Optional add-ons this season will be eggs from Jorge, and fruit that he gets from a neighboring farm.

When: The 20-week season will begin in June and last through October.

Where: Pick-up will likely be at Flatbush-Tompkins Congregational Church, East 19th Street and Dorchester Road.

Sign up here for:
Full shares, picked up weekly, not including any add-ons: $715;
Half shares, picked up weekly: $480; and
Full shares, picked up every other week: $360.

An administrative fee of $30 is added to all shares to cover the expenses of running the CSA.

The CSA is excited to offer the every-other-week full share option for the first time this year as a cost-effective alternative to weekly half shares for smaller households.

More Info: Check out the Ditmas Park CSA’s Facebook page, its website, or email ditmasparkcsa@gmail.com.

The Ditmas Park CSA was founded in 2008. It is entirely volunteer-run and community-based. Members purchase a share in the season’s harvest, joining the farm in both the risk and the bounty, and receiving produce directly from the farmer at the weekly pickup location.

Local Roots CSA
Locally grown produce comes straight from the farm to Ditmas Park through the Local Roots CSA — a network of 19 Community Supported Agriculture markets which feeds over 675 households.

Orders are due by May 20th. The Summer CSA is followed by a fall and winter season.

Local Roots says that it welcomes partnerships with small businesses, schools, and neighborhood development associations. Last year, they co-hosted apple and beer pairings with Cortelyou Craft Beer.

Local Roots is doing an Earth Day give back this year — with every order over $250, they’ll donate $10 to The Youth Farm, which provides farm education for young people and adults in Prospect-Lefferts Gardens.

Also — deepen your connection with local food, farmers, and mindful agriculture at Local Roots’ mini food conference and social gathering, The Good Festival, held on May 15th.

What’s Available: Organic veggies, pasture eggs, handmade breads, fresh picked fruits, Brooklyn made pasta and more.

When: 12-week summer season from June 7th to August 23rd. Ditmas Park pick-up is on Wednesdays.

Where: Pick up every Wednesday from 6 to 8pm at the Farm on Adderley. (Pick up locations throughout lower Manhattan and Brooklyn.)
