South Slope Weekend Events Spotlight: June 26-29
What a great weekend to be in the Slope! With everything from free Shakespeare in the park and Celebrate Brooklyn, to family fishing and a flax harvest, you won’t have to go far for fun! Check out some of our favorite events from around the neighborhood:
Discussion & Tasting: Knish, In Search of the Jewish Soul Food by Laura Silver
When: Thursday, June 26, 6:30pm
Where: Powerhouse On 8th, 1111 8th Avenue, between 11th and 12th Streets
What: After her favorite knish shop closed, journalist and native New Yorker Laura Silver went in search of the roots of the humble pastry. Join the author at Powerhouse Thursday to learn about her seven-year, three-continent quest, and taste a little knish while you’re there.

Family Fishing Clinic
When: Thursday, June 26, 6-8pm
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Learn how to tie a fishing knot, attach bait, and cast a line in this catch-and-release fishing class in Prospect Park. Families and children over the age of eight are welcome to participate. All equipment is provided. To reserve your spot, call the Audubon Center at 718-287-3400 x 303 or email eschwartz@prospectpark.org.

As You Like It In Prospect Park
When: Nightly through June 29, 7pm
Where: Endale Arch, Near Grand Army Plaza Entrance
What: Nothing says summer like a little Shakespeare in the Park. This weekend, bring a blanket and enjoy New York Classical Theatre’s production of As You Like It.
How much: Free.
Celebrate Brooklyn: War Paint and Yellowbirds
When: Thursday, June 26, 7:30pm
Where: Prospect Park Bandshell, 9th Street and Prospect Park West
What: “Intricate guitar lines, hypnotic vocals, and driving post punk rhythms” take center stage tonight as War Paint performs for the Celebrate Brooklyn crowd, joined by Brooklyn singer-guitarist-songwriter Sam Cohen.
How much: $3 suggested donation.
Our Town At Green-Wood
When: Daily through Saturday, June 28, 7:30pm
Where: Green-Wood Cemetery, 5th Avenue and 23rd Street
What: After last year’s successful Spoon River Project, theatre returns to Green-Wood for this summer’s production of Our Town, directed by James Presson. Doors open at 7pm for most shows, with the curtain going up at 7:30, but if you’d like a really unique experience, there will be special midnight performances on June 28. For more information, or to purchase tickets, visit the Green-Wood website.
How much: $30 in advance, $35 at the door, $40 for midnight shows. Note that guests under 25 and members of Green-Wood or the Brooklyn Historical Society will receive $5 off.
Animal Encounter
When: Fridays, June 26, 3-4pm
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Want to learn more about the animals at Prospect Park’s Audubon Center? Whether getting to know Snappy the Turtle, watching a snake eat a mouse, or actually taking part in a feeding, kids are sure to have an absolute blast.
How much: Free.
Explore And Create: Sunglasses Craft
When: Friday, June 27, 4pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: Look for a crazy cool crafting afternoon at the Park Slope Library Friday, when kids and their grownups will make a sunglasses art project.
How much: Free.
Celebrate Brooklyn: Shovels & Rope, Valerie June, And Shakey Graves
When: Friday, June 27, 7:30pm
Where: Prospect Park Bandshell, 9th Street and Prospect Park West
What: “A triple bill featuring the cream of the indie-Americana crop, spiked with whiskey and whipped to a tantalizing peak.” Seriously, how could you pass up a show like that?? Snag some friends for the husband and wife duo of Shovels & Rope, the “organic moonshine roots music of Valerie June, and the “spare, spooky folk” of Shakey Graves.
How much: $3 suggested donation.
Brooklyn Game Lab At The Park Slope Library
When: Saturday, June 28, 1:30-3:30pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: It’s all fun and games Saturday when Brooklyn Game Lab descends on the Park Slope Library with “unique boardgames that foster critical thinking, collaboration, and creativity for kids and teens ages 7 and up.”
How much: Free.
Row, Row, Row Your Boat In Prospect Park
When: Saturday, June 28, 12-4pm
Where: Boat ramp on Wellhouse Drive, Prospect Park
What: Grab an oar and spend a lovely Saturday rowing around the lake in Prospect Park. Boats are available on a first come, first serve basis (no reservations are accepted), and life jackets are provided.
How much: Free.
History In Your Hands: Flax To Linen
When: Saturdays and Sundays in June, 2-4pm
Where: Lefferts Historic House, Prospect Park
What: Did you know that Lefferts House has a flax crop? This month, the whole family is invited to come and give the tools used to process flax fibers into linen cloth. As an added bonus, you can dress up in some reproduction clothing for a photo-op in the farm’s wagon.
How much: $3 suggested donation
Celebrate Brooklyn: Luciano And Sandra St. Victor & Oya’s Daughter
When: Saturday, June 28, 7:30pm
Where: Prospect Park Bandshell, 9th Street and Prospect Park West
What: Join Celebrate Brooklyn on Saturday for a tribute to community activist Faybiene Miranda, led by singer Sandra St. Victor and her group Oya’s Daughter. Afterward, “the greatest hope for the survival of roots reggae,” Luciano, takes center stage.
How much: $3 suggested donation.
Flax Harvest
When: Sunday, June 29, 1-4pm
Where: Lefferts Historic House, Prospect Park
What: It’s time to harvest the Lefferts House flax, and you’re invited to lend a hand. While you’re there, learn about the tools used to process flax fibers into linen cloth, dress up in some reproduction clothing for a photo-op in the farm’s wagon, and make a flax doll to take home with you.
How much: $3 suggested donation
