South Slope Weekend Events Spotlight: July 24-27
South Slope Summer Stroll


Looking for something to do this weekend? With everything from the star crossed lovers to creatures of the night, you won’t have to go far for fun. Here’s some of our favorite events from around the neighborhood:

Animal Encounter
When: Thursdays and Fridays, 3-4pm
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Want to learn more about the animals at Prospect Park’s Audubon Center? Whether getting to know Snappy the Turtle, watching a snake eat a mouse, or actually taking part in a feeding, kids are sure to have an absolute blast.
How much: Free.

Creatures Of The Night
When: Thursday, July 24, 6:30-8:30pm
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Join Naturalist Paul Keim in Prospect Park on Thursday to meet the creatures that walk (or fly) the night. The evening will start with wine and cheese, while Paul talks about the role bats and insects play in the environment, followed by a walking tour to spot resident bats in flight. Note that the event is restricted to ages 21 and up, and reservations are required. Reserve your spot by calling 718-287-3400 x 303 or email eschwartz@prospectpark.org.
How much: $25 per person, cash only.

Celebrate Brooklyn: Nickel Creek And Secret Sisters
When: Thursday, July 24, 7:30pm
Where: Prospect Park Bandshell, 9th Street and Prospect Park West
What: For the first time in seven years, the bluegrass trio Nickel Creek is back with a new album and a tour that stops right here at Celebrate Brooklyn on Thursday. Joining in the festivities are Alabama duo Secret Sisters, who Rolling Stone says “will take [you] back to a time when vocalists valued purity over production.”
How much: $3 suggested donation.

Shape Up NYC: Cardio Toning
When: Friday, July 25, 12pm
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Shape up your core with a free cardio class in Prospect Park that will combine strength, balance, and toning exercises. No reservation is required, but it is recommended that you bring a workout mat.
How much: Free.

Intrepid Museum High Flying Design
When: Friday, July 25, 2pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: Museum educators will teach students about the four forces of flight and how they allow airplanes to fly across the sky. Afterward, students ages 6 and up will perform hands-on tasks to demonstrate these forces.
How much: Free.

Explore And Create: Ice Cream Craft
When: Friday, July 25, 4pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: Look for a crazy cool crafting afternoon at the Park Slope Library Friday, when kids and their grownups will make an ice cream art project.
How much: Free.

South Slope Summer Stroll
When: Friday, July 25, 5-9pm
Where: 5th Avenue, between 12th and 18th Streets
What: Ready for week 2 of the South Slope Summer Stroll? Once again, the Park Slope Fifth Avenue BID will transform busy Fifth Avenue into a giant block party, with live music, a climbing wall, vintage cars, fun and games from Puppetry Arts, face painting, food, drinks, an open hydrant at Prospect Avenue and Fifth, and more.
How much: Free.

South Brooklyn Shakespeare: Romeo & Juliet
When: Friday, July 25, 7pm
Where: 5th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Streets
What: The Bard is back on 5th Avenue for the second year in a row, as South Brooklyn Shakespeare presents Romeo and Juliet. Bring a blanket or chair, some tasty snacks, and settle in for an evening with the world’s most famous star crossed lovers.
How much: Free.

Celebrate Brooklyn: Amandla: A Revolution In Four-Part Harmony/Neo Muyanga & William Kentridge’s Second-Hand Reading
When: Friday, July 25, 7:30pm
Where: Prospect Park Bandshell, 9th Street and Prospect Park West
What: In honor of the 20th anniversary of the fall of South Africa’s apartheid regime, Celebrate Brooklyn presents the documentary, Amandla: A Revolution In Four-Part Harmony, which explores the “role music played in the forging of the modern nation.” Also featured, is South African composer Neo Muyanga, and his score to artist William Kentridge’s short film Second-hand Reading.
How much: $3 suggested donation.

7th Avenue Summer Stroll
When: Saturday, July 26, 512-5pm
Where:

7th Avenue from 9th-16th Streets


What: Can’t make it out on Friday night to enjoy a giant neighborhood block party? Not to worry, there’s another chance to stroll on Saturday afternoon!
How much: Free.

Summer Science Club
When: Saturday, July 26, 1-3pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: Join the gang at the Park Slope Library on Saturday for science crafts and activities. Geared toward children ages 2 and older.
How much: Free.

Row, Row, Row Your Boat In Prospect Park
When: Saturday, July 26, 12-4pm
Where: Boat ramp on Wellhouse Drive, Prospect Park
What: Grab an oar and spend a lovely Saturday rowing around the lake in Prospect Park. Boats are available on a first come, first serve basis (no reservations are accepted), and life jackets are provided.
How much: Free.

History In Your Hands: Farm & Yard Work
When: Saturdays in July, 2-4pm
Where: Lefferts Historic House, Prospect Park
What: Don’t have a yard of your own to work on? Come out to Prospect Park and help the gang at Lefferts House take care of their garden. Families will pitch in with the potato farm plot, medicinal and cooking herb gardens, and berry patches by pulling weeds and helping to water them. Be sure to bring some water and a hat. All gardening tools will be provided.
How much: $3 suggested donation

History In Your Hands: Summer Songs and Stories
When: Sunday, July 27, 2 & 3pm
Where: Lefferts Historic House, Prospect Park
What: Enjoy stories from around the world under the big tree at Lefferts House with storyteller and musician Tammy Hall.
