South Slope Weekend Events Spotlight: January 7-10

Welcome to the weekend! If you’re hanging around the Slope and looking for adventure, we’ve got everything from small works closings and hyperlocal openings, to hootenanny jamborees and birthday shows. Don’t miss our top weekend events picks from around the area.

11th Annual Small Works Show
When: Through January 10
Where: 440 Gallery, 440 6th Avenue, between 9th and 10th Streets
What: Great things definitely come in small packages at 440 Gallery, where the popular Small Works Show – made up of pieces that are all under 12″ – closes its run on January 10. Visit the 440 Gallery website for more information, and a list of the artists featured in this year’s show.
How much: Free.

CasHank Hootenanny Jamboree
When: Thursday, January 7, 8pm
Where: Freddy’s, 627 5th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Street
What: Ready for a down-home good time? Host Alex Battles leads an acoustic country jam session over at Freddy’s. Bring your fiddles, banjoes, washboards, and spoons to join in on the fun!
How much: Free.

Babies And Books
When: Friday, January 8, 10:30-11:30am
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: Explore stories, songs, and toys with your youngest South Sloper at the library on Friday with Babies and Books. Geared toward children ages 0 to 18 months.
How much: Free, but note that tickets are on a first come, first served basis, and will be handed out 30 minutes before the program’s start time.

The Lailah Lancing Experience Birthday Show
When: Friday, January 8, 10pm
Where: Excelsior, 563 5th Avenue, between 15th and 16th Streets
What: It’s Lailah Lancing’s birthday weekend, and Excelsoir is pulling out all the stops. Look for happy hour deals from 6 to 9pm, and the big birthday show from 10pm to midnight.
How much: No cover.

MulchFest
When: Saturday, January 9 and Sunday, January 10, 10am-2pm
Where: Closest locations are Prospect Park at 3rd Street & Prospect Park West and Park Circle entrance at Prospect Park Southwest & Parkside Avenues; and Green-Wood Cemetery at 25th Street & 5th Avenue.
What: Bring your Christmas tree to one of the many locations of the annual MulchFest, where they’ll turn it into mulch for healthy ground cover. At some locations (including Prospect Park), you can bring a bag and take some mulch home for your own yard or garden. Remember to remove all lights, ornaments, and netting before dropping off your tree!

Opening Reception For /rive: Anamorphosis
When: Saturday, January 9, 7-9pm
Where: Open Source Gallery, 306 17th Street, between 5th and 6th Avenue
What: Come celebrate the opening of /rive: Anamorphosis, “site-specific and mobile media projects that encourage residents to reflect upon their neighborhood and share their stories,” at Open Source on Saturday. The instillation – which runs through January 30 – features the work of Annie Berman, Samara Smith, and A.E. Souzis.
How much: Free.

Juror And Artist Talk With Amy Williams
When: Sunday, January 10, 2pm
Where: 440 Gallery, 440 6th Avenue, between 9th and 10th Streets
What: Join 440 Gallery for a discussion with the juror and three of the artists from this year’s small works show – Christina Baril, Ashley Thompson, and Meghan Willis.
How Much: Free
