South Slope Weekend Events Spotlight: December 4-7

Looking for something to do this weekend? With everything from holiday art shows and festive pups, to urban country and Santa, you won’t have to go far for fun. Here are some of our favorite events from around the neighborhood through Sunday:

Holiday Art Show & Sale
When: December 4 and 5, 4-7pm; December 6 and 7, 11am to 7pm
Where: 440 Gallery, 440 6th Avenue, between 9th and 10th Streets
What: Get creative this holiday season and surprise your loved ones with a fantastic work of art. 440 Gallery “will be stocked, floor to ceiling, wall-to-wall, with affordable, original works of art, as well as reproductions,” so it sounds like there will be a little something for everyone.

Trivial Dispute
When: Thursday, December 4, 9pm
Where: Supercollider, 609 4th Avenue between 17th and 18th Streets
What: Prove your deep, embarrassing knowledge of all things trivial at this weekly trivia night, which has been called NYC’s best bar trivia by the Village Voice.
How much: Free.

Shape Up NYC: Cardio Toning
When: Friday, December 5, 12pm
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Shape up your core with a free cardio class in Prospect Park that will combine strength, balance, and toning exercises. No reservation is required, but it is recommended that you bring a workout mat.
How much: Free.

When: Friday, December 5, 10pm
Where: Barbes, 376 9th Street near 6th Avenue
What: Join the “Martini Cowboy” as he brings his unique brand of urban country to Barbes on Friday night.
How much: $10 (strongly) suggested donation

Coffee Bark
When: Saturday, December 6, 7:30-10am
Where: Meadow beside the Picnic House in Prospect Park (Enter at PPW and 3rd Street)
What: This Saturday, our favorite off-leash advocates and their furry friends will gather beside the Picnic House for hot chocolate, hot mulled cider, and coffee, plus carols and a visit from Santa. FIDO says they’ll be providing songbooks with “dog-centric lyrics,” so stop by, enjoy a hot drink and a howl, and wish neighbors and their pups a hairy Merry Christmas.
How much: Free.

History In Your Hands: Historic Games & Needlework
When: Saturdays and Sundays in December, 1-3pm
Where: Lefferts Historic House, Prospect Park
What: Spend a cozy afternoon at Lefferts Historic House this month making your own 9-man-morris board. Families will also have an opportunity to create a small needlework sampler to take home.
How much: $3 suggested donation.

Family Holiday Party & Tree Lighting at Greenwood Park
When: Saturday, December 6 from 3-6pm
Where: Greenwood Park, 555 7th Avenue
What: While your kids see Santa, you can grab a beer (or hot chocolate!) at this free holiday soirée that includes music from Frank Gallo of Rolie Polie Guacamole, gift bags, and free face painting. Plus, powerHouse Books will be on hand with gifts, and there will be an outdoor market with trees, wreaths, and other decorations for sale.
How much: Free

Songs For Unusual Creatures
When: Saturday, December 4, 4pm
Where: Barbes, 376 9th Street near 6th Avenue
What: Quirky author and composer Michael Hearst, along with his five-piece band, presents Songs For Unusual Creatures: a highly-geeky A/V presentation of some of the most bizarre animals that roam the planet. Featuring: Michael Hearst, Ben Holmes, Allyssa Lamb, Kristin Mueller, and Jonti Siman. Fun for the whole family!
How much: $10 strongly suggested donation.

23rd Annual Quilt Show Reception
When: Saturday, December 6, 4-5pm
Where: Lefferts Historic House, Prospect Park
What: Get to know the artists behind this year’s quilt show masterpieces at Lefferts House. The Saturday afternoon event will include a reception and informal discussion with members of the Quilters Guild of Brooklyn.
How much: Free

Early Morning Bird Walk: Twelve Birds Of Winter
When: Sunday, December 7, 10am-12pm
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Spend a beautiful morning with our park’s fine feathered friends. This month’s walk, led by the Brooklyn Bird Club, will be on the lookout for Prospect Park residents that do not fly south for the winter.
How much: Free.
