South Slope Weekend Events Spotlight: December 10-13
Welcome to the weekend! If you’re hanging around the Slope and looking for adventure, we’ve got everything from giant menorahs and small works, to conga lines on ice and movies at the library. Don’t miss our top events picks from around the area.

Open Source Gallery Soup Kitchen
When: Through December 31, 7-9pm
Where: Open Source, 306 17th Street, between 5th and 6th Avenues
What: It’s time to celebrate food, art, and community at Open Source Gallery. Starting December 1 and continuing throughout the month for as many days as they have volunteers, Open Source will invite a range of people “from neighbors to artists to others who are down on their luck or simply hungry” to a warm, free meal from 7-9pm. Food is available on a first-come, first-served basis, and all are welcome. It’s not all about the food, though. Guests can also look forward to an artistic element from the evening’s host. Brooklyn’s Largest Menorah Lighting
When: Through December 13, Times Vary
Where: Grand Army Plaza
What: Hanukkah is in full swing, so be sure to head over to Grand Army Plaza for the giant menorah lighting. December 10, the lighting will take place at 6pm, December 11 at 3:30pm, December 12 at 7pm, and December 13 at 6pm. In addition to the menorah, there will be live music, dreidels, doughnuts, latkes, and prizes for the kids.
How much: Free.
Opening Reception For 11th Annual Small Works Show
When: Thursday, December 10, 6pm to 9pm
Where: 440 Gallery, 440 6th Avenue, between 9th and 10th Streets
What: Great things definitely come in small packages at 440 Gallery this month, where the popular Small Works Show – made up of pieces that are all under 12″ – returns on Thursday night. If you can’t make it to the opening reception, the show runs through January 10. Visit the 440 Gallery website for more information, and a list of the artists featured in this year’s show.

NYC Rent Freeze Outreach Event For Seniors
When: Friday, December 11, 11am to 4pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: If you’re at least 62-years-old, you may be eligible to have your rent frozen through the NYC Rent Freeze Program (SCRIE). To see if you qualify, visit the NYC Department of Finance website.
How much: Free.
Open Source Gallery Winter Fundraiser 2015
When: Friday, December 11 at 6:00pm
Where: 257 17th Street (between 5th and 6th Avenues)
What: Celebrate 2015 with Open Source Gallery on Friday, and help support their impressive schedule for 2016. Look for food, drinks, a silent auction with works from New York artists, and (of course) a wonderful time.
How Much: Tickets, which can be purchased here, are $42.
World’s Longest Conga Line On Ice
When: Saturday, December 12, 11am (Registration begins at 10am)
Where: LeFrak Center, Lakeside
What: Ever wanted a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records? Join the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life and TEAL as they attempt to break the world record for the longest conga line on ice. The first 200 skaters receive free admission and free skate rentals, so get out there and conga for a great cause, Brooklyn!
How much: $15 (includes admission and skate rental).
Movies At The Library
When: Saturday, December 12, 2pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: Have a Dragon Ball Z fan? Don’t miss Saturday’s movie at the Park Slope Library – Dragon Ball Z, Resurrection F.
How much: Free.
Me, Myself And Eye
When: Sunday, December 13, 4:40pm
Where: 440 Gallery, 440 6th Avenue, between 9th and 10th Streets
What: 440 Gallery kicks off the December edition of their Me, Myself and Eye performance series on Sunday with the acoustic bass stylings of Masa Kamaguchi.
