South Slope Weekend Events Spotlight: August 7-10

Looking for something to do this weekend? With everything from Peter Pan in the park to our farewell to Celebrate Brooklyn, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Here are some of our favorite events from around the neighborhood:

Animal Encounter
When: Thursdays and Fridays, 3-4pm
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Want to learn more about the animals at Prospect Park’s Audubon Center? Whether getting to know Snappy the Turtle, watching a snake eat a mouse, or actually taking part in a feeding, kids are sure to have an absolute blast.
How much: Free.

Free Carousel Rides
When: Every Thursday in August, 12-6pm
Where: Prospect Park
What: Who doesn’t love a ride on the Prospect Park Carousel?! Every Thursday afternoon throughout the month of August, kids 12 and under are invited to hop on for free. Note that children must be accompanied by an adult.
How much: Free.

Celebrate Brooklyn Presents Altan/Maura O’Connell
When: Thursday, August 7, 7:30pm
Where: Prospect Park Bandshell, 9th Street and Prospect Park West
What: It’s a night of Irish song and dance at Celebrate Brooklyn on Thursday as Altan and Maura O’Connell take the stage.
How much: $3 suggested donation.

Shape Up NYC: Cardio Toning
When: Friday, August 8, 12pm
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Shape up your core with a free cardio class in Prospect Park that will combine strength, balance, and toning exercises. No reservation is required, but it is recommended that you bring a workout mat.
How much: Free.

Celebrate Brooklyn Presents Asian Dub Foundation: THX 1138 And Taylor McFerrin
When: Friday, August 8, 7:30pm
Where: Prospect Park Bandshell, 9th Street and Prospect Park West
What: It’s another music and movie night at Celebrate Brooklyn! This weekend, Asian Dub Foundation performs the world premiere of their score to George Lucas’ film THX 1138. Before the film, Taylor McFerrin will rock the park with his one-man show of vocals, beat boxing, samples, and live instruments.
How much: $3 suggested donation.

Free Public Rowing
When: Saturday, August 9, 12-4pm
Where: Boat ramp on Well House Drive, Prospect Park
What: Take the kids for a boat ride around the Prospect Park Lake! The Prospect Park Alliance and the Village Community Boathouse are teaming up to make rowing accessible to all on select dates this summer, so paddle on over.
How much: Free.

Summer Science Club
When: Saturday, August 9, 1-3pm
Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue
What: Got a budding biologist or a future physicist? Kids ages 2 and up are invited to try out some fun science crafts and activities in the children’s room every Saturday through mid-August.
How much: Free!

Peter Pan And The Pirates
When: Saturday, August 9, 2-4pm
Where: Zucker Natural Exploration Area, Prospect Park
What: In Peter Pan and the Pirates, Eva Dean Dance is inspired by the new Zucker Exploration Area to create a magical site-specific Neverland, choreographed to David Kahne’s Peter Pan Ballet sound score.
How much: Free!

History In Your Hands: Historic Games
When: Saturdays & Sundays in August, 2-4pm
Where: Lefferts Historic House, Prospect Park
What: Have the kids ever played 9-Man Morris? Well, they’ll learn how by making their own board, which they can take home to continue playing.
How much: $3 suggested donation.

Celebrate Brooklyn Presents St. Vincent And San Fermin
When: Saturday, August 9, 7:30pm
Where: Prospect Park Bandshell, 9th Street and Prospect Park West
What: Celebrate Brooklyn’s 2014 season comes to a close with guitar legend St. Vincent and Brooklyn composer and songwriter Ellis Ludwig-Leone’s orchestral folk-pop project San Fermin.
How much: $3 suggested donation.

Hip Tot Family Day @ Lakeside
When: Sunday, August 10, 11am-2pm
Where: Lakeside, Prospect Park
What: Bring the family for some Lakeside water fun, where you’ll hear tunes from Father Goose and Mr. Marc the MC + DJ Beyonder and a story time with Melanie Hope Greenberg, plus you’ll enjoy sing-alongs, crafts, and freebies (while supplies last). Rain or shine!
How much: Free!
