South Slope Weekend Events Spotlight: August 28 – September 1
Freddys Labor Day BBQ


It’s the long Labor Day weekend, y’all! With everything from historic games to holiday barbecues, you won’t have to go far for fun. Here are some of our favorite events from around the neighborhood:

Free Carousel Rides
When: Thursday, August 28, 12-6pm
Where: Prospect Park
What: It’s the last Thursday for free carousel rides in Prospect Park! Kids 12 and under are invited to hop on for free. Note that children must be accompanied by an adult.
How much: Free.

Shape Up NYC: Cardio Toning
When: Friday, August 29, 12pm
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Shape up your core with a free cardio class in Prospect Park that will combine strength, balance, and toning exercises. No reservation is required, but it is recommended that you bring a workout mat.
How much: Free.

History In Your Hands: Historic Games
When: Saturdays & Sundays in August, 2-4pm
Where: Lefferts Historic House, Prospect Park
What: Have the kids ever played 9-Man Morris? Well, they’ll learn how by making their own board, which they can take home to continue playing.
How much: $3 suggested donation.

Poppin Your Blue Collar
When: Sunday, August 31
Where: Mary’s Bar, 708 5th Avenue and 22nd Street
What: Over on 5th Avenue, Mary’s is rocking a little Labor Day BBQ action. Look for drink specials Friday through Monday: The Jolly Rancher, an Espalon Repasado shot for $5 with a slice of Watermelon chaser, The Brown bag special, a 16.9oz of Wolters pils with a shot of Sauza silver for $7, and the Thunder Road, a jabinero chili infused sauza margarita for $7. Bring $10 on Sunday, and chow down for Mary’s last community BBQ of the summer.

Labor Day In Prospect Park
When: Monday, September 1, 12-6pm
Where: Prospect Park
What: Prospect Park is at the ready on Monday to help make this Labor Day one for the record books. Look for everything from nature walks and bird watching, to potato sack races and carousel rides. You can find the full schedule of activities here.
How much: Audubon activities free/$3 suggested donation for Lefferts House games/$2 per carousel ride

Labor Day BBQ
When: Monday, September 1, 3pm
Where: Freddy’s, 627 5th Avenue
What: Don’t have a backyard of your own to celebrate Labor Day? Head over to Freddy’s! The grill fires up at 3pm, so come with goodies of your own, or eat what they’ve got!
How much: Free!
