South Slope Events Spotlight: September 2-7

Mother Nature apparently missed the memo about Labor Day being the end of summer. What a scorcher! If you’re looking to escape this week’s heat, South Slope is overflowing with fun things to do through Sunday. Here’s some of our favorite events from around the neighborhood:

Miss Ida Blue
When: Tuesday, September 2, 9pm
Where: Freddy’s, 627 5th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Streets
What: “Hear the blues as a drunk, raunchy, and illicit work of art” when Miss Ida Blue takes the stage with her eight piece orchestra.
How much: Free.

Hidden Gems Of Green-Wood
When: Wednesday, September 3, 1-3pm
Where: Green-Wood Cemetery, 5th Avenue and 23rd Street
What: Did you take the whole Labor Day week off? Kick back in a seat on the Green-Wood trolley, and get to know some of the cemetery’s off the beaten path residents.
How much: Tickets, which can be purchased here, are $10 for Green-Wood members/$15 for non-members.

Family Fishing Clinic
When: Thursday, September 4, 6-8pm
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Learn how to tie a fishing knot, attach bait, and cast a line in this catch-and-release fishing class in Prospect Park. Families and children over the age of eight are welcome to participate. All equipment is provided. To reserve your spot, call the Audubon Center at 718-287-3400 x 303 or email eschwartz@prospectpark.org.
How much: $5 (cash only)

Trivial Dispute
When: Thursday, September 4, 9pm
Where: Supercollider, 609 4th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Streets
What: If you know a thing or two about a thing or two, head over to trivia night at Supercollider. Winners can look forward to drink prizes and bragging rights.
How much: Free!

Shape Up NYC: Cardio Toning
When: Friday, September 5, 12pm
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Shape up your core with a free cardio class in Prospect Park that will combine strength, balance, and toning exercises. No reservation is required, but it is recommended that you bring a workout mat.
How much: Free.

Coffee Bark
When: Saturday, September 6, 7am-9am
Where: Meadow beside the Picnic House in Prospect Park (Enter at PPW and 3rd Street)
What: It’s the first Saturday of the month, which can only mean one thing…Coffee Bark with FIDO. There will be treats for dogs (and their owners), as well as information on off-leash activities.
How much: Free.

History In Your Hands: Hearth Cooking
When: Saturdays & Sundays in September, 2-4pm
Where: Lefferts Historic House, Prospect Park
What: Roll up your sleeves and explore cooking the old fashioned way. Families can look forward to making popcorn with fresh herb butter, apple pies on a rotating basis, churning butter, grinding corn, and pealing apples.
How much: $3 suggested donation.

Morning Bird Walk
When: Sunday, September 7, 8am
Where: Audubon Center, Prospect Park
What: Spend a beautiful morning with our park’s fine feathered friends. The walk, led by the Brooklyn Bird Club, will look for adult and juvenile birds who are migrating from their summer nesting grounds to their winter homes in the tropics.
How much: Free.

Food Truck Rally
When: Sunday, September 7, 11am-5pm
Where: Grand Army Plaza
What: Have the munchies? Stop by Prospect Park on Sunday — the food trucks are back!

Fundraiser: Get Your Pic Taken In A DeLorean Time Machine
When: Sunday, September 7, 12-9am
Where: Leathernecks Tattoo,

What:

Through time right on 5th Avenue — well, you can sit in one of the original DeLorean Time Machines, anyway! Get your photo taken, hang out with the shop’s crew, and know you’re helping a good cause.


How much: $15, and all of the proceeds will be donated to Terrence Cardinal Cooke Health Care Center’s Huntington’s Disease Unit.
