South Slope Events Spotlight: October 4-7

From a rarely seen glimpse into the homes of our area’s quietest residents to an opera with beer, there’s plenty to do in South Slope this weekend, and these are our top picks.

Thursday, October 4

The rules? Four chords, no plugs, all welcome. Intrigued? Stop by Freddy’s, 627 5th Avenue, tonight at 9pm for Cashank Hootenanny Jamboree, a honky-tonk jam session that is sure to leave you a hootin’ and a hollerin’.

Friday, October 5

If you consider opera too stuffy or snooze-inducing to acknowledge, you haven’t seen Opera on Tap. The group will be at Barbes, 376 9th Street,  at 8pm. Grab a beer and marvel.

Saturday, October 6

Dying to explore some lesser know regions of Green-Wood? The cemetery will be opening the doors to some of their most famous mausoleums and inviting visitors down into the catacombs, both of which are normally closed to the public, both Saturday and Sunday from 12-4pm.

Been aching to get back in shape? The Armory YMCA is having an open house from 12-4pm. If you’re ready to sign-up, the joiners fee is waved through October 8.

Sunday, October 7

Simon Pegg fans will be descending on Cafe Steinhoff, 422 7th Avenue, this Sunday at 10:30pm to watch Shaun of the Dead, the restaurant’s movie of the week.
