South Slope Events Spotlight: October 24-27

From ukuleles to a puppy costume parade, there’s a little something for everyone this weekend in South Slope.

Ukulele Night with J. Walter Hawkes
When: Thursday, October 24, 7:30pm – 10:30pm
Where: Freddy’s, 627 5th Avenue, between 17th and 18th Street
What: It’s time for Freddy’s monthly uke jam. Host Katie Down (aka Genevieve of The Ukuladies) welcomes any and all ukulele players to “join, play and sing in the atmosphere of friends singing songs, sharing playing tips, and generally having fun with the most friendly instrument in world!” At 9:30pm, look for special guest J. Walter Hawkes, a 3-time Emmy Award winning composer/trombonist/ukulele player.

Gypsy George & the Open Road Love Affair and Tara Lynne Band
When: Friday, October 25, 8pm
Where: The Fifth Estate, 506 5th Avenue, between 12th and 13th Street
What: South Slope’s Tara Lynne Band is celebrating their CD release with Gypsy George and the Open Road Love Affair at The Fifth Estate Friday night. Come show some local love.
How much: Free!

The Battle of Brooklyn Scavenger Hunt
When: Saturday, October 26, 12pm (clue sheets can be picked up between 11:30am and 1pm)
Where: Green-Wood Cemetery, 4th Avenue and 35th Street entrance to Green-Wood Cemetery
What: Explore the route that George Washington and his troops took during The Battle of Brooklyn in this scavenger hunt from Historic Districts Council. Wear your walking shoes, though, because the hunt will lead you to points all around Brooklyn. There will be special prizes for the winning teams plus rewards for all participants.
How much: $15 per team (up to four people on a team). You do not need four people to register, though. You’ve got the option at the event of flying solo, or being assigned to a team. Tickets can be purchased on the Historic Districts Council website.

1st Annual Howl-O-Ween Costume Bash for Dogs
When: Sunday, October 27, 2pm to 4pm
Where: Prospect Park, South Long Meadow above the dog pond
What: Let the pups have some Halloween fun this year at Go Fetch Run’s costume bash in Prospect Park. The costume parade begins at 3pm for anyone interested in participating. Grand prize walks away with free dog training from Calm Energy Dog Training and a free month of classes from Go Fetch Run. Afterward, dogs can enjoy free treats and a go in the “down and dirty obstacle course.”
