Tax season is around the corner! That means it’s time to dig into that pile of receipts and W-2s and figure out exactly how much money you owe the government — or the government owes you!

The IRS says it will begin accepting 2014 tax forms from individuals as early as January 20. If you make less than $60,000 a year, you can get a jump on the paperwork through the IRS Free File program, which opens today, January 16 – though your refund won’t come any faster. The IRS website can help you find a free tax filing software.

If filing by yourself sounds overwhelming, you have a few more options:

1. You can hire an accountant, who may or may not take 50 percent of your hard-earned tax refund.

2. If you are the more resourceful, organized type, you can pay nominal fee to download H & R Block Software, or use the TaxAct website.

3. Finally, if all the numbers are making you feel a little crazy, you can head over to Senator Marty Golden’s office, which is currently offering free tax preparation services to residents making less than $30,000 annually.

Appointments will be available at Senator Golden’s district office located at 7408 5th Avenue, on Sundays and Mondays, from February 15 through April 13. Sunday appointments will be scheduled from 11am to 3pm and Monday appointments will be scheduled in the evenings from 6pm to 9pm. To set up an appointment, call (718) 238-6044.

“I once again look forward to helping hundreds of my constituents complete their tax returns at no charge,” said Golden in a statement. “For seventeen years, my office has hosted the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program, an invaluable service to those who qualify, saving constituents hundreds of dollars they would otherwise spend in tax preparation services.  I urge all those who qualify to call now to make an appointment.”

Happy filing, neighbors!
