From the U.K. to San Francisco, Kensington’s local animal shelter has attracted attention for its care of an abandoned dog with a tragic story.

Sean Casey Animal Rescue, at East 3rd Street and Fort Hamilton Parkway, rushed a dog to emergency care after she was found abandoned in Prospect Park on Friday with her paws frozen to the ground.

Staff from Sean Casey were alerted about the dog, described as a lab/pit bull mix, who vomited pieces of rubber, and had blood in her urine after she was rescued. The dog, since named Bindi, was found to be severely anemic and x-rays showed she had three pieces of metal in her stomach. After testing, she was transferred to a 24-hour emergency clinic “for round the clock care.”

Bindi is making excellent progress, Sean Casey told us today. “She’s made a big jump in the last 24 hours.” Now recuperating from surgery and a blood transfusion, Bindi has a lot more energy. And her paws will heal very quickly, he added.

Casey said all the news coverage about Bindi is wonderful. “We hope it will bring attention to Bindi and all the dogs like her who need homes,” he said. Currently, the shelter has about 40 dogs who are in need of adoption.

“Only one person will be able to adopt Bindi,” Casey said. He is urging the scores of people who have offered to take her in to “adopt a dog in honor of Bindi.”

If you would like to help Bindi and other dogs like her, Sean Casey is also urging readers to consider making a donation to the shelter’s critical care program. Donations can be made on Sean Casey’s website.
