Saturday: Sand Sculpting Contest At Coney Island

Bring your artistic talent to the beach and participate in Coney Island’s Annual Sand Sculpting Contest and Unity Day this Saturday, July 21, for a chance to win cash prizes.

The event will take place from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. on the Coney Island beach and boardwalk, between West 10th and West 12th Streets. Prizes of $400, $200, and $100 will be awarded for the top sculptures in five different categories, which means that a total of 15 prizes will be granted! Entertainment on the boardwalk will also be provided.

Check out the video above, which shows sculptors doing their thing in 2009, when the event also got hit by a sudden rainstorm.

This event is hosted by the Astella Development Corporation, a non-profit organization that provides services including affordable housing opportunities, assistance to small businesses, as well as job and job training opportunities. They host several events and meetings in Coney Island, in the hopes of improving the neighborhood’s quality of life.
