Dr. Mikhail Presman, busted in a sweeping Medicare fraud scheme earlier this year, is facing millions of dollars in fines and significant jail time. The New York Post is reporting that Presman pleaded guilty to the charges against him, which alleged he stole more than $1 million from Medicare.

Last May, Bensonhurst Bean was the first to report on Presman’s arrest following a raid on his 29 Van Sicklen Street residence (pictured above). The bust was part of a sweeping federal effort that looked to lock up 89 individuals suspected of scamming Medicare out of $223 million. Presman, 56, was the only Brooklyn resident in the large takedown.

Presman, a former employee of the Brooklyn Veteran’s Administration hospital, ran his fraud from 2006 to 2013. He claimed to be treating a multitude of patients, racking up over a $1 million in Medicare bills. But, evidence showed, most of the appointments never existed. During a part of the stretch when he was claiming patients, he was actually taking a vacation with his family in China.

The disgraced doctor faces $3.6 million in fines and up to 10 years in prison following his guilty plea. United States Attorney Loretta Lynch spoke to the seriousness of Presman’s crimes.

“Dr. Presman was hired and paid by the taxpayers to treat those who sacrifice so much for our country — our injured veterans. As alleged, by defrauding the Medicare program, he betrayed the trust placed in him and stole from the very taxpayers who paid his salary. Far from honoring their sacrifice, Dr. Presman used our veterans as a cover for deceit and fraud,” Lynch said.
