A police officer shot and killed Dwayne Jeune, an emotionally disturbed, 32-year-old man, in the East Flatbush home he shared with his parents yesterday afternoon after Jeune lunged at officers with a carving knife, according to the NYPD.

Jeune’s mother, Dulcina “Hazel” Jeune, called police at approximately 12:22pm on Monday, July 31, to report that her son was acting erratically at their 1370 New York Avenue apartment, police said.

The mother let the four responding police officers into the fifth floor apartment when they arrived on the scene. Upon entering the residence, her son reportedly charged at the officers with a large carving knife, according to the police report.

One of the officers tried subduing Jeune with a taser, hitting him once in the chest and once in the arm, but it had no effect on him, according to the NY Daily News, and Jeune kept “moving forward.”

A second officer then fired at Jeune with his gun. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.

Neighbors told the NY Daily News that they heard about four gun shots fired. None of the officers involved in the incident were injured, but the officer who shot at Jeune was taken to Kings County Hospital for ringing in his ears, the Daily News reports. The name of the officer has not been released.

Back in October, a NYPD officer shot and killed Deborah Danner, a 66-year-old mentally ill woman, who charged at officers with a baseball bat in her Bronx apartment. The officer involved in that shooting was charged with murder in May, according to the Daily News report.
