Play It Safe With Ice In Prospect Park
frozen prospect park lake

Even with our fancy new LeFrak Center at Lakeside, there may be some among you that are tempted to tread onto the park’s frozen waterways. Not a good idea. In addition to being against the rules, it’s extraordinarily dangerous. Here are the safety guidelines regarding ice from NYC Parks:

Never go on frozen waters (unless clearly marked otherwise with official signs).

Parents and caregivers should make sure children are never unattended near ice.

If you hear cracking, lie down immediately to try to distribute your weight.

If you witness someone falling through ice, never attempt to make a rescue by yourself. Call 911 and notify the proper authorities. Be sure to give the exact location and an account of the incident.

Pets can easily fall through the ice, too, so be sure to keep a close eye on your pups around the lake, especially if they have a tendency to bolt after birds in the park.

In short, if you want to hit the ice, keep it safe and stick to LeFrak.

Hours for the LeFrak Center in Prospect Park are Monday-Thursday from 11am-6pm, Friday and Saturday from 9am-10pm, and Sunday from 9am-8pm. Skating rink admission is $6 on weekdays and $8 on weekends and holidays. Skate rental is $5. Every Monday (excluding holidays), children 12 and under can enter the rink for free between 3-6pm for unlimited skating accompanied by an adult. The $5 skate rental charge still applies, though.
