School will once again be cool, thanks to a big win for PS 10 (511 7th Avenue, between Prospect Avenue and 17th Street) in District 38’s first ever participatory budgeting vote.

Along with Red Hook’s PS 15, South Slope’s PS 10 will now have funding to wire the building’s hottest classrooms for air conditioning.

“This is a historic day for our district,” Councilmember Menchaca said in a statement. “We have empowered our residents to shape the improvements they want to see in their neighborhood schools, parks, streets and libraries.

“In our first year,” he continued, “I am proud to report that nearly three thousand answered our call and affirmed our quest for a more inclusive participatory democracy.”

The district now holds the city-wide record for largest voter turnout.

Community Board 7 also walked away with enough votes to fund street resurfacing throughout the district, with a particular focus on 7th Avenue. The complete list of winning projects can be found here.
