November is hopping! We have book interviews and launches, brass bands, some Sunday ethics, and more! Don’t miss some of our favorite events from around the area:

Where: Park Slope Library, 431 6th Avenue at 9th Street
What: Join Kensington novelist Amy Shearn as she hosts her popular interview series at the Park Slope Library. Brooklyn By The Book Presents: Stacey Schiff In Conversation With Jodi Kantor
When: Thursday, November 12, 7:30pm
Where: Congregation Beth Elohim, 274 Garfield Place (at 8th Avenue)
What: Pulitzer Prize-winner Stacy Schiff’s new history, The Witches: Salem, 1692, tells how it all began one frigid Massachusetts winter when a minister’s daughter began to shake and convulse. A year later, 19 accused lay dead in one of early America’s darkest periods. In a sweeping account of the men and women, politicians and children caught up in a web of superstitions, Schiff takes on the Salem Witch Trials with the same urgency and erudition that illuminated her previous works, Cleopatra: A Life and Véra (Mrs. Vladimir Nabokov). In conversation with Jodi Kantor.
How much: $10. Tickets are available here. ($7 for BPL/CBE cardholders, and $43.55 for admission with book purchase)

What: Since 2008, Raya Brass Band has thrilled audiences with its energetic brand of soul shaking, border defying dance music. West Philadelphia Orchestra plays music that is mostly rooted in Eastern European folk music traditions, but we do it with our own voices, Philadelphia voices nourished by our jazz heritage, tinged with punk rock, soul, and cheesesteaks, and blended with the voices of our community.

Smorgasburg and The Brooklyn Flea at Industry City
When: Saturday, November 14 and Sunday, November 15, 10am-6pm
Where: Industry City, 241 37th Street (between 2nd and 3rd Avenues)
What: Smorgasburg has moved down to the booming Industry City, which may be new territory for you. While the move was announced some time ago, Industry City is housing both Smorgasburg and The Brooklyn Flea every Saturday and Sunday until March 27, 2016. Keep in mind that Industry City is big — the entrance address is 241 37th Street. This is just two blocks from the 36th Street D/N/R subway station—only two stops from Manhattan on the D train!—and a short walk from the B35, B38 and B70 bus stops. The 39th Street exit off the Gowanus Expressway/BQE also takes you pretty much to our doorstep (and to the second-busiest Costco in America next door).

Sunday Colloquy: Responsibility and Risk-taking: Making Touch Choices With Jone Johnson Lewis
When: Sunday, November 15, 11am-12:30pm
Where: Brooklyn Society for Ethical Culture, 53 Prospect Park West at 2nd Street
What: We each have our own comfort level with a balance of risk-taking and responsibility.  It’s probably obvious that going “too far” in either direction will result in either disasters or missed opportunities (and maybe other disasters).  How do we judge the balance point, especially when we’re interacting with others and not just deciding for ourself?
How much: Free.

Girls Read for Girls Readathon
When: Sunday, November 15, 1:00pm-3:30pm
Where: Brooklyn Public Library – Central Branch, 10 Grand Army Plaza
What: The event kicks off with a short program with some entertainment & learning opportunities (last year Public Advocate Tish James, Council Member Laurie Cumbo, and Linda Sarsour addressed the readers). Particpants then spread out across the beautiful library and read for about 90 minutes! Check out will start around 3:30. All proceeds from the 2015 Girls Read for Girls Read-a-thon will benefit The Malala Fund. Girls determine their reading goal and then ask supporters for a per page pledge or a one-time contribution. Sample pledge sheet & e-mail asking for contributions are available on the event page. Supporters can make donations to the Malala Fund here.
How much: Free.
