Park Slope Planner: The Best Events May 8-11

We’re hoping the rain holds off this weekend, and we get another chance for long walks in Prospect Park. But whether the sun is shining or there’s a downpour, there are some great events worth checking out around the neighborhood, including a reading by some edgy moms, an east coast/west coast dance party, an afternoon of classical music, and more:

Edgy Moms 2014
When: Thursday, May 8, 8pm
Where: The Old Stone House, 336 3rd Street
What: Brooklyn Reading Works presents this annual favorite with hosts Louise Crawford and Sophia Romero. Guests are authors Joanna Clapps Herman, Michele Zackheim, Karen Ritter, and Elizabeth Laura Nelson, and poets Alex Beers and Marietta Abrams Brill.
How much: A $5 donation includes wine and snacks plus gift bags from sponsors Babeland and The Modern Chemist.

Bohio Music & Bright Brown
When: Friday, May 9, 9pm
Where: Tea Lounge, 837 Union Street
What: Up first at 9pm, Bohio Music brings a fusion of roots world music, jazz, and African tones with subtle hints of reggae. Following them at 10pm is Bright Brown, songs of multiple layers and textures.
How much: Free!

Brooklyn Bike Jumble
When: Saturday, May 10, 10am-4pm
Where: The Old Stone House, 336 3rd Street
What: This bicycle flea market will get you set for riding this summer. Vendors from all over will be on hand with new and used bikes and accessories, and everything bicycle-related, from art to clothing to collectibles.
How much: Free!

Gotham: Writers In The City, With Rachel Kushner
When: Saturday, May 10, 4pm
Where: Central Library, Dweck Center, 10 Grand Army Plaza
What: Rachel Kushner discusses her second novel, The Flamethrowers, the story of a young artist and the worlds she encounters in New York and Rome in the mid-1970s. Curated and hosted by Rob Spillman, writer and editor-in-chief of Tin House.
How much: Free!

House Party: East Coast Vs. West Coast
When: Saturday, May 10, 11:30pm
Where: Union Hall, 702 Union Street
What: They’ll be spinning classic hip hop joints from the east and west coasts, and your enthusiastic boogie responses will help to determine which coast reigns supreme.
How much: Free with RSVP.

Heart For Art: Mother’s Day Gift Sale
When: Sunday, May 11, 12-1:30pm
Where: Resurrection Park Slope, 274 Garfield Place
What: Celebrate your mother, sister, daughter, or friend by purchasing one of the beautiful or tasty offerings for sale. All proceeds will got to support the Resurrection Brooklyn Adoption Fund and the Ethiopia ACT Project.
How much: Free!

Classical Interludes: The Horszowski Trio
When: Sunday, May 11, 4pm
Where: Central Library, Dweck Center, 10 Grand Army Plaza
What: See violinist Jesse Mills, cellist Raman Ramakrishnan, and pianist Rieko Aizawa perform Beethoven’s Archduke Trio, Op. 97, and Schubert’s E-flat trio, Op. 100.
How much: Free, but children under 6 years old will not be admitted.
