Kings Of Karaoke

Where: The Rock Shop, 249 4th Avenue
What: If you’ve got a touch of cabin fever from being stuck inside today, this weekly karaoke party is on tonight. May we suggest you get those frustrations about this crazy winter out of your system with a rousing rendition of something from their metal selection.

The White Hot Room With Jean Grae
When: Friday, February 14, 8pm (doors 7:30pm)
Where: Union Hall, 702 Union Street
What: If you’re not familiar with Jean Grae, it’s time to get so. The hip-hop artists is everywhere and doing everything these days, and on Valentine’s Day she’ll be bringing her new web-based series, Life With Jeannie, to Union Hall, where she’ll be in conversation with Lizz Winstead.
How much: $10, tickets available in advance
8 Totally Platonic Valentine’s Day Events

What: Still looking for a fun date idea for the holiday? Or are you searching for an event that will mock it? From a screening of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind (which doubles as a fundraiser!) to comedians telling stories about heartbreak, we’ve got several fun options right in the neighborhood.
Hey Queen Presents: Leather & Lace, The Stevie Nicks Party
When: Saturday, February 15, 10:30pm
Where: Littlefield, 622 Degraw Street
What: Hey Queen! is a monthly multi-gender queer dance party featuring both emerging and established performers every month with a new theme. This month, they’ll be be channeling epic power ballads of banshee women and real life witches — join them to twirl into a state of ecstasy.
How much: $5 before 11:30pm, $7 after, tickets at the door
Classical Interludes: From Harlem To Shanghai And Back
When: Sunday, February 16, 4pm
Where: Central Library, Dweck Center, 10 Grand Army Plaza
What: Pipa master Min Xiao-Fen’s compositions are inspired by the reformed Beijing Operas and folk songs that were once dedicated to the workers and soldiers of the Cultural Revolution, and follows that with versions of well-known Thelonious Monk tunes. For the second set, Min’s quartet recasts the work of jazz trumpeter Buck Clayton, Chinese composer Li Jinhui, Count Basie, and Duke Ellington.
How much: Free! Children under the age of 6 will not be admitted.
What Are You Afraid Of?
When: Sunday, February 16, 8pm (doors 7:30pm)
Where: Union Hall, 702 Union Street
What: Mara Wilson (the self-described “recovering former child actor”) hosts this new series that takes you through comedian and performers’ anxieties (and a few of her own). This month features Griffin Newman, Todd Dakotah Briscoe, Emma Tattenbaum-Fine, and John Early.
How much: $6 in advance, $10 at the door
