Palermo Pastry Shop has been in Mill Basin since 1974, and to this day they are keeping the neighborhood as sweet as can be.

Last night was my first time at Palermo, which is located at 5517 Avenue N, and I may have gone a little overboard with what I got. What can I say? I wanted a little bit of everything.

When I first walked in I marveled at all of the colorful and varied types of treats. I had no idea where to start so I asked the girl behind the counter what their specialty was. Without a moment’s hesitation, she suggested the cannoli. So I got two large cannoli.

They did not disappoint. When I opened the box I was excited to see each cannolo (did you know “cannolo” is the singular form of cannoli?) shell overflowing with the smooth cream and green sprinkles. They were delicious and clearly perfected over 42 years.

There was no way I was stopping there.

How can you go to a pastry shop and not try their cake? So I got a piece of the red velvet cake as well, and nearly filled up on it before I even got to the tiramisu.

The red velvet was a beautiful slice of soft cocoa cake painted red topped with creamy white frosting and a ribbon of red and green frosting to garnish the masterpiece.

Next up was the tiramisu, and it was perfect. It comes prepared in a cup. It’s a brown coffee-flavored  cream-like dessert that is topped with cocoa powder, and a cherry. There are also ladyfinger biscuits dipped into the tiramisu in a traditional style.

I asked the girl behind the counter what else she likes and her eyes lit up as she told me to try the chocolate chip cookies. So I got a box of cookies.

These cookies are the real deal. They’re crisp but quickly melt into doughy chocolatey goodness once it’s in your mouth. The chocolate chips aren’t merely clumped into the cookie but are streaked across the cookie, giving every bite the perfect amount of chocolate.

To top this gluttonous escapade off, I ordered their last blueberry muffin of the night. It was a fairly large muffin with fresh, sweet blueberries baked in. The crispy muffin top was coated with sugar to make the muffin a little sweet.

As a newcomer, it is clear to see how this pastry shop became a staple in the neighborhood. Each treat that I tried was made with care, love, and a mastery of the baking art over nearly half a century. If you’re invited to a dinner party and don’t know what to bring, then you can’t go wrong with Palmero.
