Ouch. R Train Tunnel Under East River Closing For Repairs
Work in the Financial District? You might want to start preparing for a painful commute, because come August the MTA is shutting down the R train tunnel between Manhattan and Brooklyn for an estimated 12 to 14 months.
We know.
The MTA explained on their website that a complete shutdown was more favorable than (what they estimate would be) 38 months of weekend service disruptions to repair the damage sustained during Hurricane Sandy.
What’s a commuter to do? Weekdays, the Brooklyn R will end at Court Street, requiring you to transfer to the A, C or F at Jay Street/Metro Tech, the B or Q at Dekalb, or the D, N, R, 2, 3, 4 or 5 at Atlantic/Barclays Center. On weekends, the R train will operate over the Manhattan Bridge between Atlantic Avenue and Canal Street.
To add a little bit of salt to that wound, the G train will also be shut down between Brooklyn and Queens for 12 weekends beginning July 6.
