A man was rescued after his boat got stuck in the riptide and crashed into the rocks behind Ceasar’s Bay on Bay Parkway on October 5 after a rapid response from two 62nd Precinct police officers.

Officers Thomas Mercado and Frank Cusimano were the first to respond to the distress call at approximately 10am. The two spotted a man, who was described only as elderly, in danger as the boat was close to capsizing. The duo sprung to action, climbing onto the slippery rocks and into the choppy water, grabbing the vessel and holding it steady to safeguard the man until FDNY and EMS could arrive, according to a witness.

The officers had no training or experience in water rescues prior to the daring attempt, a police source told Bensonhurst Bean.

FDNY and EMS arrived soon after, successfully bringing the mariner ashore. He was safe and in sound physical condition.
