NYC Department Of Health Is Spraying For Mosquitos, Again?
It seems like only last month the DOE was spraying for mosquitos in our local areas. Wait, it was last month.
According to the DOE website, another spraying will take place tomorrow, September 6 from 8:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m. The zip codes affected are: 11209, 11214 and 11228.
They’ll be using an aerial larviciding technique, which means that they will drop bacterial granules by helicopter in order to kill mosquito larvae before they grow into adult mosquitoes.
Residents have expressed concern over the lack of information from the DOE in regards to spraying and scheduling, and this does not do much to clear the air. For example, why is more spraying necessary?
Mosquitos carrying the West Nile Virus were found near the Dyker Beach Golf Course, however, the DOE notification does not limit the spraying to that area alone.
As for tomorrow, the rules for safety remain the same:
- People with asthma or other respiratory conditions are encouraged to stay inside during spraying since direct exposure could worsen these conditions.
- Air conditioners may remain on, however, if you wish to reduce the possibility of indoor exposure to pesticides, set the air conditioner vent to the closed position, or choose the re-circulate function.
- Remove children’s toys, outdoor equipment, and clothes from outdoor areas during spraying. If outdoor equipment and toys are exposed to pesticides, wash them with soap and water before using again.
- Wash skin and clothing exposed to pesticides with soap and water. Always wash your produce thoroughly with water before cooking or eating.
