Now Open: Annie’s Blue Ribbon General Store

We’ve got a new shop at 232 Fifth Avenue. Less than a month after former tenant Scaredy Kat vacated the space, Annie’s Blue Ribbon General Store has officially moved in– and though owner Annie Cantrell and her team are still stocking the shelves and doing some setup, the customers are pouring in from the street to browse the charming new shop.

The store offers an eclectic and often whimsical mixture of home goods, gifts, toys, decor, stationery, crafts, and even some apparel. They’ve also got a retro nod to the general stores of yore, with a display of nostalgic candies like wax lips, pop rocks, taffy, and more. (Check out the full inventory here.)

While the location is new, the store is not; for the past six years, Annie’s Blue Ribbon General Store was doing business in Boerum Hill. Annie tells us the move to Park Slope was the result of multiple factors aligning at the perfect time.

“Our lease was up, and we were needing a bigger space. And [Park Slope] is such a great neighborhood! So when Damond [Gallagher, owner of Scaredy Kat] called and said they were moving, it was perfect.”

Not only does the new location practically double the retail area, it also provides much-needed storage space in its full basement. Annie’s Blue Ribbon General Store also functions as a huge online retailer, and all of the merchandise ships from the store.

The store will celebrate its opening on August 29 from 3 – 5 pm with a community back-to-school event. In collaboration with State Bags and its GiveBackPack program, the event will give local families an opportunity to enjoy giveaways, have some fun, and check out the merchandise. For each backpack purchased, a backpack will be given to a student in need.

Annie’s Blue Ribbon General Store is located at 232 5th Avenue, between President and Carroll Streets. Open 11 am – 7 pm Monday through Saturday, noon – 6 pm Sundays.
