New Walgreens Now Open In Windsor Terrace, Key Food Still Under Construction

More than two years since the Windsor Terrace Key Food closed and following a neighborhood effort to ensure a supermarket would still reside in at least part of the location, the new Walgreens quietly opened on Monday at 589 Prospect Avenue.

After several opening dates for the Walgreens came and went — first they said spring, then July, then August 15 — the neighborhood now has another place to drop in for prescriptions and all the things you’d expect from a large chain drugstore.

And until the Key Food opens in the adjacent building next door — which isn’t looking like it will happen too soon, from what we’ve seen from the outside — neighbors in the area who have a last-minute need for a gallon of milk, orange juice, beer, or some other regular drugstore foods and drinks can pop in here rather than hike to one of the next-closest places.

As for that Key Food, you may remember that earlier this year, Assemblymember Jim Brennan reported it should “be ready to open for business in the first week of October of 2014, though, hopefully sooner if at all possible.” But as we get closer to November, construction continues. We’ll let you know when we hear about a new potential opening date.
