Neighbor, DPC contributor, proud new papa, and pizza tester extraordinaire Avi Glickstein is currently starring in Object Collection‘s No Hotel, an opera in which players on stage and screen make their audience see double.

The New York Times’ Steve Smith, considering his experience at No Hotel’s September 7 debut, called its effect “one of self-conscious absurdity and affectionate play… You know what’s coming–and then it doesn’t.”

Avi (whose color is totally teal) and sometimes-co-conspirators Fulya Peker and Daniel Allen Nelson change and exchange costumes and personas throughout the piece, which explores the parallels and inverse qualities of hotels and theaters. Meanwhile, Eric Magnus and Tavish Miller make minor appearances and switch sets in a fashion that couldn’t possibly be called “seamless,” but is better as is.

A small group sitting just behind the actors plays violin, guitar, and drums throughout the play, the score as alternately frenzied and strangely calm as the characters themselves, and the setup of the Incubator Arts Project stage lends itself to the fascinating, not-quite-symmetric Rorschach test of No Hotel.

No Hotel is at Saint Mark’s Church on the Bowery (131 E 10th Street on the corner of 2nd Avenue in Manhattan) Thursday-Sunday nights at 8pm until September 22. You can find dates and tickets here.
