The proud decades-long tradition of the lady lifeguards of Brighton Beach lives on. A Parks Department lifeguard heroically revived a man who nearly drowned in the waters of Brighton Beach on Friday.

At 2 p.m. in the sweltering Friday afternoon heat, two women carried out an unconscious man from the ocean, near Surf Avenue. A Parks Department lifeguard, identified by friends as “Jessie,” ran over to the man.

Here’s how a witness described the scene to the New York Post:

“She got down on her knees and started chest compressions on her own,” the witness said. “She was doing this for two or three minutes.”
The woman eventually revived the victim. “She was on the verge of tears,” according to the witness.
The unidentified victim was rushed to Coney Island Hospital, where he was being treated in the Intensive Care Unit, according to a hospital spokesman.

Parks Department First Deputy Commissioner Liam Kavanagh didn’t miss a beat, declaring that Jessie’s actions were all in a day’s work for a city lifeguard.

“All of our lifeguards are well trained for a situation like this and are ready to act when the situation requires,” Kavanagh told the Post.
