Two local civic groups are inviting Fort Greene and Clinton Hill residents to help them flip the switch this Sunday on the lights adorning a 14-foot-tall tree standing at the northeast corner of Fort Greene Park.

The Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony begins at 4 p.m. at the entrance on Myrtle Avenue and Washington Park, where free hot chocolate, festive music, and Santa Claus will be on hand, courtesy of the Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership (MABP) and the Fort Greene Park Conservancy (FGPC).

According to Daniel Scorse, director of public space initiatives at MABP, the ceremony is a celebration of community.

“The tree came from Santo, who’s been selling trees on the corner of Myrtle Avenue and Hall Street for years,” Scorse explained. “We have 1,500 LED mini-lights and a 2-foot-tall ‘starburst’ tree topper.”

The tree’s lights go on at 4:30pm.
