Jack Katz, Executive Director of the Flatbush Avenue BID for 22 Years, Passes Away

We’re sad to note that Jack Katz, pictured above with Lauren Collins of the Church Avenue BID, passed away yesterday.

Jack was Executive Director of the Flatbush Avenue Business Improvement District for 22 years, a member of Community Board 14, and an active member of the EMJC. He has long been a major force in the neighborhood. Around this time of year, he regularly helped feed the needy at Thanksgiving and supplied toys to the less fortunate at Christmas, said Lori Citron Knipel.

“While I worked as Housing Director for the Flatbush Development Corporation, Jack and I shared office space,” Council Member Jumaane Williams said in a statement. “He was extremely knowledgeable and efficient, having everything filed and in a Rolodex. Jack moved smoother than people with the best computers. He was a pretty sharp dresser and never had a stitch out of place. Jack was the last of his breed, and he will be missed.”

“We’re gonna miss him big time,” said Alvin Berk, Chairman of Community Board 14. “He’s done an awful lot in the community. The relationship has been close for as long as the Flatbush BID has been in existence.”

The funeral service will be held on Sunday, December 2 at I.J. Morris Funeral Home at 1895 Flatbush Avenue at 10:00 a.m. Details of the Shiva will be announced at the service on Sunday.

Our thoughts are with his family, friends, colleagues and fellow community members.
