Updated 10:27am: Good news! Celeste, from Kettle & Thread (the new arts & crafts shop that will soon be opening next to El Acuario), said El Acuario will be reopening after they undergo renovations to make the front area more of a bar.

Original post: For several days, we’ve walked by El Acuario Restaurant (1217 Church Avenue, between Argyle and Westminster Roads) to try and figure out what’s going on with the Mexican eatery that has been shuttered for a little while.

El Acuario closed

Unfortunately, we haven’t seen anyone in the restaurant and their answering machine is full, so we haven’t been able to track down what the deal is. Still, we’re holding out hope that they’re not permanently closed, as no “For Rent” sign has appeared. One neighbor who wrote to us about it wondered if they’re just undergoing renovations. We’re hoping that’s the case and that we’ll soon be able to chow down on their guac, burritos, sopas and more!

Yum, sopas at El Acuario.
