Ice Cream Memories

A little ice cream truck competition could be a good thing for Mister Softee, which seems to be the only game in town for us anymore. On the blog Jeff Eats, Brooklyn-bred Jeff recalls what it was like living at 811 Cortelyou Road in the ’50s and ’60s, and all the ice cream heaven that included:

…two ice cream “trucks” Bungalow Bar and Good Humor competed on a daily basis for “us” kids’ business. When I think back on those days, I can’t believe that ice cream bars were 5 & 10 cents…

If you’re unfamiliar with Bungalow Bar, according to Wikipedia there was a chant heard ’round Flatbush that went like so:

Bungalow Bar
Tastes like tar
Put it in a jar
And throw it far

Can anyone who’s gotten an ice cream from a Mister Softee truck recently share how much those cost now (and whether it tasted better than tar)? What has 50 years done to the price of ice cream from a truck–and what will it be like in another 50 years?
