Happy Anniversary, Martha!

Happy Anniversary, Martha!

Fort Greene favorite Martha opened in its current incarnation at 184 Dekalb Avenue (between Carlton Avenue and Cumberland Street) one year ago today. Ahead of this evening’s anniversary festivities, we spoke to owner Melissa Gorman–partner in the restaurant along with of Andres Valbuena (pictured above)–about their experiences over the last 12 months.

How does it feel prepping for Martha anniversary festivities, as compared to how it felt initially opening?

It feels great! We didn’t open as much as relaunch last summer. We had been operating as The Brooklyn Sandwich Society in the same space but ended up changing our name and concept. That was exciting and also a little scary since we weren’t sure how it would be received. But a year later, we can see we made the right decision. This first anniversary is pure celebration.

What’s become easier for you in the last year, or what didn’t you realize was going to be such a challenge?

We’ve become more efficient, for one. But I think that’s natural in any business as it gets older. I think most things have gotten easier rather than more challenging. There’s always unexpected challenges that come up in a restaurant, but that won’t ever end!

What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned so far?

To go with our instincts, and to adapt when necessary.

Who are some of the people who make your job better–folks you talk to or work alongside on a daily basis, or ones that only visit once in a while but you’re always glad to see again?

Everyone on staff makes our jobs better. We truly think of them as family, and we try hard to cultivate good relationships with them and give opportunities for them to explore their interests within the restaurant and learn new skills. Sometimes we learn from them, too! We also have wonderful relationships with the folks at Brooklyn Grange, who we pick up produce from at the Navy Yard once a week and are always glad to see, the farmers at the Greenmarkets, and of course our regular customers.

Fort Greene is a special neighborhood — it’s got more of a small town vibe than most other neighborhoods I’ve lived or worked in within Brooklyn. We have people who’ve been coming in since we were The Brooklyn Sandwich Society who’ve seen us grow and have supported us throughout, as well as people who’ve recently become aware of us but now come in once a week at least. We absolutely love the people in the neighborhood who’ve helped shape who we are today.

What all do you have planned for anniversary festivities?

We’re open as usual from 6-11pm, but we’ll be celebrating with $1 Narragansett Lagers and $1 TSO chicken wings. Our TSO Fried Chicken is one of our most popular dishes, but we normally don’t even serve wings.

What can neighbors expect for Martha Year Two? Are there any events, dishes, or services you’re looking forward to offering that you didn’t have before?

We’ve got lots of ideas in the works, but nothing to disclose quite yet!
