With a $2.8 million lien against it, a long-under-construction, outsized mansion in Borough Park will go to auction this week.

The three-floor residence at 1670 42nd Street between 16th and 17th avenues has sat unfinished for years, towering over the block’s modest homes.

Its neglected, overgrown front yard, full of tall weeds and debris stands in stark contrast to the manicured plots of its neighbors.

It’s been a loathsome site for residents, who’ve filed as many as 50 complaints with the Department of Buildings since construction began in 2003 or 2004, largely for failure to maintain the property, which has dilapidated fencing and open doors. The DOB has issued $68,500 in fines for violations, including some deemed hazardous. Many of those remain unpaid and open.

After filing for bankruptcy last year, the home is headed to foreclosure auction this Thursday, March 20.

Construction originally kicked off under owner Sara Goldberger, but the property changed hands to 1670 42nd Street LLC in 2006 and shortly after began falling behind on its mortgage, according to records on PropertyShark.

How much will it go for? It’s too soon to tell. But the better question is: how the heck did this get approved in the first place?

The answer? It didn’t. Department of Buildings records show that there’s been a stop work order on the property since 2008 for failing to conform to the plans they submitted to the agency, including making it taller and bulkier than proposed.
