Grand Larcenies And Burglaries Lead Crimes In The Area

According to the most recent CompStats for the police precincts in our area, grand larcenies and burglaries are two of the top types of crimes so far this year — in the week ending April 7, there were 8 incidents of grand larceny in the 72nd Precinct, and 6 burglaries in the 78th Precinct.

Each week, the NYPD releases CompStat data that shows statistics of crimes in each precinct in the city. South Slope is covered in part by both the 72nd and 78th Precincts, so we’re sharing the stats from both with you, along with a few recent specific incidents, below.

If you have been the victim of a crime, after you’ve reported it to the police, if it’s something you think your neighbors should know about, please let us know at editor@bklyner.com.

As you can see above, grand larcenies in the 72nd Precinct are ahead of last year across the board. The single murder noted was of 31-year-old Tara Beardsall, who was stabbed to death on 51st Street in Sunset Park. Her 44-year-old boyfriend Alex Santiago was charged with second-degree murder in her death.

The next 72nd Precinct Community Council meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, May 14, 7:30pm at the 72nd Precinct, 830 4th Avenue.

Grand larcenies are also topping the crimes in the 78th Precinct. Recently in our area, we learned about a robbery on an R train at the 4th Ave/9th St stop, and about a thief who was caught on camera stealing an iPhone at El Milagro on 7th Avenue.

The next 78th Precinct Community Council meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, April 30, 7:30pm at the 78th Precinct, 65 6th Avenue.
