The White Helmets at Temple House of Congregation Beth Elohim

Where: Temple House of Congregation Beth Elohim, 274 Garfield Place
What: Congregation Beth Elohim hosts a free screening of the Oscar winner for Best Documentary Short, “The White Helmets,” tomorrow evening. British Director Orlando von Einsiedel’s 40-minute NetFlix original documentary follows a Syrian civil defense group of first responders who risk their lives rescuing civilians from the rubble after airstrikes.

A Q&A with Ahed Fettouk, a Syrian activist and refugee from Aleppo, will follow the screening. This is the first event in the Global Refugee Crisis Series, a program of educational screenings and events highlighting the worldwide refugee crisis.

Moonlight at Clinton Hill Library

What: The Clinton Hill Library will host a free screening of “Moonlight,” the Oscar winner for Best Picture that chronicles the life of a young black man from childhood to adulthood as he struggles to find his place in the world while growing up in a rough Miami neighborhood.

Director Barry Jenkin’s highly acclaimed film picked up the Oscar for Best Picture Sunday night after an unexpected mix-up when the award was initially presented to “La La Land.” The film also took home the Best Supporting Actor award for Mahershala Ali and the Best Adapted Screenplay award for Jenkins and Tarell Alvin McCraney.
