15th Street Cafe, which closed on the corner of 5th Avenue and 15th Street in October, is back and better than ever in a brand new location at 535 6th Avenue, between 14th and 15th Streets.

Rebranded OS Cafe (Off To Start Cafe), the coffee shop has a much cozier feel than it’s former 5th Avenue home, due in large part to the hands-on efforts of husband and wife owners Javed and Tasnim.

“The 6th Avenue location just felt like it was a better fit,” explained Javed, who designed and built the cafe’s counters. “In addition to the upstairs space, we’re finishing up another seating area downstairs that will also be used for sing-alongs.

“That way,” he continued, “people won’t be disturbed if they’ve come to the cafe to work.”

The cafe’s location and name aren’t the only changes brewing.

“We’re now serving Cafe Grumpy coffee,” Tasnim said. “Cafe Grumpy has come in several times now to give us training sessions, and it’s been wonderful.”

“Customers really seem to like the change,” added Javed.

We definitely approved. Our cafe au lait (12 oz for $2.50) was perfection.

“We’re really trying to focus on our coffee product,” Javed said, “but like our 15th Street location, we will be serving a small selection of made-to-order vegetarian sandwiches in the coming weeks.”

Sandwiches aren’t the only things customers can look forward to. The cafe features items from The Chocolate Room, Balthazar pastries

OS Cafe Shortbread

…and shortbread from the Shortbread House of Edinburgh.

“We spent our honeymoon in Scotland, and fell in love with shortbread,” explained Tasnim. “We knew we had to have it in the cafe, so we found a distributor, and order it directly from them.”

Shortbread and coffee? Yes, please.
