Beginning today, July 8, you can nab locally grown vegetables, fruit and flowers at the first-ever farmers market at Kings County Hospital (451 Clarkson Avenue).

The city Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC) will offer the farmers market on Clarkson Avenue, between E. 37th and E. 38th Streets, every Wednesday, from 8am-4pm, through November 25 in an attempt to make fresh produce more accessible to the surrounding community, as well as fight obesity and chronic disease.

“Farmers markets directly support HHC’s efforts to build healthy communities and we’re very happy to keep expanding the program to bring affordable food options to more and more neighborhoods,” HHC President Dr. Ram Raju said in a statement to the media. “Along with regular checkups and exercise, a healthy diet with fruits and vegetables keeps people fit and helps to control or avoid chronic health conditions such as diabetes and hypertension.”

The HHC has increased the number of farmers markets it offers at its facilities across the city, going from nine last year to 11 this year. The other new site is at Gouverneur Health Medical Center in Manhattan. The HHC also runs a farmers market at Coney Island Hospital (2100 Ocean Parkway, between Avenue Z and Shore Road).

Numerous payment options are in place at the market, and shoppers can use EBT/SNAP, Health Bucks, Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program coupons, and Women, Infants and Children coupons.
