After neighbor Brent let us know that it looked like Famous Pita (967 Coney Island Avenue) had been shut down by the city Department of Health, we reached out to the DOH – and they told us that the owners were found operating with an expired food service establishment permit.

The DOH said that once the permit is renewed, the restaurant can reopen.

Additionally, the DOH noted that if a restaurant has an expired permit, they are given multiple reminders to renew before they are closed. In this case, Famous Pita was first alerted to the expired permit in June of 2014, the DOH said.

Another outlet, Great Kosher Restaurants Magazine, reported in October that Famous Pita would be closing for good, though we haven’t been able to confirm that it is, indeed, not returning.

With the restaurant closed, where will you be going to get your late night falafel fix?
