A new genealogical research program at Green-Wood Cemetery could help Brooklynites and beyond discover a few extra branches on their family tree.

Named Green-ealogy, the program makes Green-Wood’s institutional records, historical documents, and photographs available to the public, providing such ancestral details as cause of death, genealogical charts of family members, grave diagrams, and family and business correspondence.

“Cemeteries are all about the living and their appreciation and understanding of those who have gone before,” explained Green-Wood President Richard J. Moylan in a press release.

“Cemeteries also play a major role in genealogy,” he continued. “Green-Wood is proud to offer family members a chance to learn more about their ancestors and give them new insight into their own past.”

The process is fairly simple. Fill out your research request on the Green-Wood website (the initial review is free). After submission, you’ll receive a research proposal for locating records that relate to your search, an estimate of how much time it will take to locate, copy, and prepare those records, and what it will cost.

Research fees are $28 per half hour, plus fees for photocopies, digital scans, and/or photographs.

Ready to start exploring your past? Additional information, including what to expect from the research findings, and a full breakdown of fees, can be found on the Green-Wood website.
