Eco-Festival: Kingsborough’s Earth Tribute

Today is Day 3 of the Kingsborough Community College Fourth Annual Eco-Festival 2009.

If you’re reading this in the early morning hours, you still have time to head out to the edge of South Brooklyn to catch the 10:20 a.m. address on the day’s theme: Conservation.

The end of the event will be marked by the presentation of a film at 3:30 p.m. by Werner Herzog, entitled “Encounters at the End of the World”.

The general community is invited to this event, but you will need to check the website for a full listing of today’s events — which includes special speakers from the Sierra Club and Roots and Shoots (a program of the Jane Goodall Institute), music by Dwayne & The Last Days and Times, as well as presentations and workshops run by Kingsborough professors.

Here is some information from the Eco-Festival webpage:

Kingsborough Community College is hosting its fourth annual Eco-Festival on April 21-23, 2009. The theme for this year is “living on earth.” The festival is designed to provide a unique opportunity for students, faculty, and members of the Brooklyn community to gather together and engage in dialogue centered on our environmental problems and the challenges we face globally at the dawn of the twenty-first century. The Eco-Festival was the winner of the 2008 CUNY Sustainability Award for outstanding environmental education and advocacy.
Eco-Festival 2009 will be constituted of students and faculty from many disciplines, community leaders, environmental activists, writers, and artists. It will feature keynote speakers, films, lectures, workshops, and other events and activities. Students and teachers from the larger educational community are invited to attend. The event is free and open to the public. Eco-Festival is under the umbrella of the Kingsborough Coordinated Undergraduate Education (CUE) Initiative and is co-sponsored by the Student World Assembly. Partial funding for Eco-Festival 2009 has been provided by Con Edison and The New York Times.
The mission of Eco-Festival is:
   * to raise ecological literacy
   * to foster civic and global citizenship
   * To promote meaningful dialogue about environmental issues and sustainable development
   * to inspire grass-roots environmental action and stewardship
