Dyker Library Is Finalist In NYC Neighborhood Library Awards
Great news: Dyker Library is one of the 10 finalists for the third annual NYC Neighborhood Library Awards! Huzzah!
The annual awards are often dubbed the “Oscars of libraries” and has steadily grown in popularity as more library branches have been nominated and won financial prizes for their programs — and as more library patrons have found out and rallied around their neighborhood library.
“One of the most uplifting and moving experiences I had when witnessing a staff member patiently and kindly teach an 85-year-old man – a novice who never used a computer before – how to access the internet and set up his very first email account,” said Dyker Heights resident and library volunteer Patricia.
“That moment is but one example exemplifying why the Dyker Branch is so valuable to this neighborhood – beyond the practical, some residents have their world opened up because of the quality of services provided there,” she added.
Dyker Library joins two other Brooklyn libraries as finalists: the Sunset Park Library, and Kings Bay Library in Sheepshead Bay.
Each year, five branches win $20,000 each for programming, with the remaining five finalists receiving $10,000 each. Awards are funded through the Stavros Niarchos Foundation and the Charles H. Revson Foundation.
Winners will be announced in June.
