With the news that the DOT plans to install a traffic signal at the intersection of Caton Avenue and East 8th Street, we’ve been thinking about other intersections in the area that could benefit from a signal.

One intersection that may benefit from a traffic signal is Beverley and Westminster roads. The intersection is the only one along Beverley Road between Coney Island Avenue and Ocean Avenue that does not already have a signal. After hearing about a crash at the corner last week, we decided to look into the the NYPD’s 2015 crash statistics for the crossing.

According to the NYPD’s numbers, there were nine incidents at Beverley and Westminster between January and November 2015. There were four incidents alone in October. At least five people have been injured at the intersection during the 11-month timespan, and the most common contributing factor to the incidents was “driver inattention/distraction.”

After a number of crashes at Westminster Road and Newkirk Avenue, the DOT installed a traffic signal at the intersection last February. Since the installation, there have only been three crashes at the corner and none since May, according to the NYPD’s statistics.

Do you think that the Beverley Road and Westminster Road intersection should have a traffic signal? Are there other intersections in the neighborhood that you think need a light?
